Ex-Service Home in Solihull Supports Military Nursing Students

<< back

Registered Nurses Gill Dunn and Cecilia Ezeani from The Royal Star & Garter Home for disabled ex-Service men and women, Solihull, recently completed a mentorship course to enable them to support military nursing students through placements at the Charity's Solihull Home.

The first three military students, Army Privates Amy Jones, Lisa Marie Trotman, and Samantha Kaye from the Defence School of Health Care Studies at Birmingham University, are undertaking a 3-week placement alongside their mentors at the home during March with another contingent of students arriving in July.

Director of Care, Pauline Shaw, said "Since our Solihull Home opened in 2008 we have established an excellent relationship with the University and it is our intention to increase the number of mentors so that more military nursing students can gain practical experience at our home. As a military charity it is a great opportunity for our residents to meet some of today's young Serving personnel and for the students to meet and help care for our veterans."

Since opening in August 2008, The Royal Star & Garter Home Solihull has won the Pinders Healthcare Design Award for the best design of a new larger Care Home, and has achieved a 2-star (good) rating from the Care Quality Commission, the national body which monitors care home standards.

There are currently vacancies for new residents at the Solihull Home and anyone who has Served in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, or who is the spouse, widow(er), or partner of someone who has Served is eligible to apply for a place. About The Royal Star & Garter Homes Charity - founded in 1916.

The Royal Star & Garter Charity has been caring for disabled ex-Service personnel since 1916. The Charity offers its residents the best in nursing and therapeutic care, as well as a wide variety of leisure activities both internally and at outside venues. Anyone who is physically disabled or incapacitated and has served in Her Majesty's Forces is eligible to apply for a place at a Royal Star & Garter Home, as well as the widows, spouses and partners of ex-Service people.

The Royal Star & Garter Charity is in the process of building new homes around the country to provide nursing care for disabled ex-Service people in the best modern surroundings and, for the first time, will include specialist dementia care facilities to address this growing need. The first of these prestigious new homes opened in Solihull, the West Midlands, in the summer of 2008 and has already established itself as a centre of excellence. The state-of-the-art facilities at Solihull, which will be emulated in the other new homes, will also enable the Charity to offer interim care for young disabled Service personnel.
