FRENCH STUDENTS VISIT THE ROYAL STAR & GARTER HOME AT RICHMOND

The Royal Star & Garter Home for disabled ex-Service men and women in Richmond was delighted to welcome a group of 28 students from Brittany.  The students, all aged 17 and 18, are studying Social Care and Health Care at the Maison Familiale School at Poullan sur Mer and wanted to visit a nursing home during an educational trip to England.

The students visited two of the nursing units at the Home where Nurse Care Managers explained how the residents are cared for and demonstrated hoisting equipment used. Students were able to see some of the residents’ rooms and also visited the physiotherapy and activities departments.  In physiotherapy they saw a special exercise bike that can be used by someone in a wheelchair, as well as the usual gymnasium apparatus. It was explained that because many of the residents of the Home are elderly, passive exercise is also carried out by the therapists in individual’s rooms. The Activities department was next on the tour where the students saw the specially adapted kitchen, reminiscence room, computer room, games room, workshop and gardening club.

The students then moved on to the Queen’s Room where a game of indoor bowls was in progress. They were able to observe some residents who have limited arm movement joining in the game with the assistance of a special “launcher”.

Students and residents then gathered for a special tea which included Brittany cakes brought by the guests.

The group leader, Teacher Marie Guillou, said it had been a most interesting and rewarding visit.

About the Royal Star & Garter Charity

The Royal Star & Garter Home, an independent registered charity based in Richmond, has been caring for disabled ex-Service personnel since 1916. The Charity offers the best in nursing and residential care plus a range of therapies. There are also a wide variety of leisure activities available for our residents to enjoy, both inside and outside the Home. In future years, The Royal Star & Garter Charity intends to build new homes, in the Richmond area and elsewhere, in which to provide specialist care for the elderly disabled, and for those with dementia for whom there is very little provision at present.
