MOTHER NATURE PLAYS HER CARD AT THE ROYAL STAR & GARTER POLO MATCH!
Guests at the Royal Star & Garter Polo Challenge Cup this recent Bank Holiday enjoyed a leisurely afternoon of dining whilst watching the displays at Ham Polo Club. As is not unheard-of with British Bank Holidays we were unfortunately subjected to bad weather! Considering the conditions, it was deemed unsafe for the horses and players to go ahead but despite this, everyone remained in good spirits and enjoyed the afternoon of entertainment and a splendid lunch. A selection of unique prizes was raffled raising a grand sum of £1,600 for the disabled ex-Service men and women who live at the Home.
Following the drinks reception in the clubhouse for gold ticket holders, the afternoon commenced with the Band of the Army Air Corps marching display. During lunch, a Notedraw was held raising £1,300 for the Charity. Prize winners included Lesley Howard – a visit to HMS Bristol; Jack Jacometti – two VIP tickets to the grand military tattoo at Fort Nelson; Judy Altaras - ‘Gates on the Park’ restaurant voucher for use at the Richmond Gate Hotel; Anabelle Kingsley - a meal at Bar Estilo; David T Aggelt – a case of the ‘Mayor’s Brew’; Philip Barlegg – a signed copy of Simon Weston’s book and Nicola Goldsmith – a four and a half litre bottle of Jameson’s Irish Whisky. Nicola kindly offered to auction off the whisky which sold for a further £160. Special guest, Falklands Veteran and Vice President of the Charity, Simon Weston OBE, then gave an inspiring speech to all those attending thanking everyone for giving so generously.
The Charity would like to sincerely thank all those involved in the event both on the day and in the lead up to it. Thanks go to our sponsor Christina Jackson of Action International; the Richmond & Twickenham Times; Radio Jackie 107.8FM; Ham Polo Club; The Horse Rangers Association Musical Ride Display Team; Band of the Army Air Corps; the Charity’s volunteers and all those who generously provided prizes for the Notedraw. Special thanks go to all those Ground Ticket holders who stayed for the afternoon despite weather conditions and supporting the Charity.
Thank you to everyone for supporting The Royal Star & Garter Home. To enquire about future events please call 020 8439 8168.
The Royal Star & Garter Home, an independent registered charity based in Richmond, has been caring for disabled ex-Service personnel since 1916. The Charity offers the best in nursing and residential care plus a range of therapies. There are also a wide variety of leisure activities available for our residents to enjoy, both inside and outside the Home. In future years, The Royal Star & Garter Charity intends to build new homes, in the Richmond area and elsewhere, in which to provide specialist care for the elderly disabled, and for those with dementia for whom there is very little provision at present.
