Military Nurses
The Royal Star & Garter Charity is delighted to have forged strong links with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine where military nurses from all three services undergo their training. Based at Birmingham City University, the nursing students are offered work placements at our homes in Richmond and Solihull where they help care for our residents during a six week period. This gives them excellent practical skills in caring for the elderly as well as a variety of nursing procedures and practices.
The military connection is of course a huge bonus, as the students get to meet and support veterans in our homes and the residents are delighted to meet the youngsters Serving in today's Armed Forces.
The students also work at Selly Oak Hospital, where the injured from current conflicts are sent, and the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. They are, of course, eventually sent to areas of conflict to assist casualties on the frontline.
Our staff and residents alike have the greatest admiration for the military students who have also helped us at Fundraising events, most recently the Birmingham Town Hall concert with the Royal Marines Band and the Canoldir Choir, where they served wine at the reception and helped with the exit collection. Some also appeared on stage with Falklands veteran Simon Weston, a great ambassador for The Royal Star & Garter Homes, where they received a well deserved resounding round of applause.
